WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: average

Weather conditions:

Spring came early and snow melted rapidly in early May. However, cold weather returned in the second half of May and temperature dropped almost to freezing point. June was moderately warm, and amount of precipitation was slightly above average. Thunderstorm with pelting rain occurred on several occasions, which generally is not typical for the area. Temperature dropped below freezing point only at night in the beginning of June. Cold weather did not return in June, and other extremal weather events were not observed.

Season temperature: warm
Season humidity: rainy
Date of 50% snow-cover: 5-10.05
Date of ice-break on rivers: mid May
Date of final loss of snow: late May

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Nesting density of waders at the very east of the study area (where surveys were conducted in 2001) remained at the same level. However, numbers of breeding waterbirds in similar habitats in the upper reaches of the Ponoi River were considerably lower. This area was not surveyed in 2001, and reasons for low numbers there are not clear. Breeding phenology of waterbirds did not differ from average. Predation pressure and impact of abiotic factor on bird reproduction were likely quite low. Breeding conditions were favourable.

Summary of fauna studies:

Perfunctory surveys were carried out in the area with view of finding regionally rare species of birds. We made list of all recorded species, with detailed comments for rare birds. The data were used for creation of protected area, and will further be used to prepare a review of rare species duistribution in the Ponoi River basin.
